For the first time, a Leica robotic total station is equipped with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU)—the same type of chip that powers artificial intelligence in today’s smartphones and next-generation vehicles. What sets the TS20 apart is that its AI runs directly on the instrument itself, right in the field, with no cloud connection required. This is edge AI: intelligence that processes data locally, delivers instant results, and continues to operate even in remote areas with no cellular coverage. For surveyors who regularly work beyond network reach, this represents a meaningful improvement to everyday field operations.

In practice, the TS20’s AI is delivered through three key capabilities, each designed to address a common source of inefficiency and error on the job site.

1. AI-Powered ATR : Target Lock That Stays Locked

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) has been around for years, but AI takes its reliability to a new level. On the TS20, AI-assisted ATR can search for, acquire, and measure targets in conditions that often challenged previous generations of instruments: light rain, fog, partially obstructed prisms, or even measurements taken from reflective tape. Combined with PowerSearch and Dynamic Lock, it delivers fast target acquisition and stable, dependable tracking.

In the Field

A sudden rain shower in the middle of the day no longer means stopping data collection and waiting for better conditions. The ATR maintains its lock on the target, allowing work to continue uninterrupted. On a job site where every hour matters, that can mean the difference between finishing the work as planned and losing half a day returning to complete it tomorrow.

2. AI-Detect : Putting an End to Prism Errors

One of the most common—and costly—sources of surveying errors is also one of the simplest: measuring with a prism type that differs from the one selected in the software. A single incorrect prism constant can compromise an entire dataset and lead to time-consuming rework.

AI-Detect addresses this issue by automatically recognizing the target type being measured and alerting the surveyor whenever it does not match the prism selected in Captivate—before the error makes its way into the data. The verification happens automatically in the background, requiring no additional steps or user intervention.

3. AI-Follow : Never Lose Sight of the AP20 Again

Scheduled for release as a software update in 2026, AI-Follow takes automation a step further for one-person surveying workflows using the AP20 AutoPole. When the line of sight is briefly interrupted—whether the surveyor passes behind a building, a tree, or a parked truck—the instrument predicts the pole’s movement, searches for it, and re-establishes lock significantly faster than before.

The result is fewer interruptions, a smoother workflow, and a tangible productivity boost for surveyors working alone.

To Note
AI-Follow will be delivered through a software update after launch. Investing in a TS20 today means investing in an instrument that continues to gain new capabilities over time—without the need to replace or upgrade the hardware.

Why Onboard AI — Not the Cloud — Matters in Canada

Because all AI processing is handled by the NPU inside the instrument itself, the TS20’s intelligent features operate completely independently of an internet connection. There’s no latency, no need to send data to external servers, and no compromise on data privacy.

Whether you’re working on a mining site in northern Quebec, along a remote forestry road, or conducting a cadastral survey in an area with limited connectivity, the AI performs exactly the same way it would in the middle of a city. Its capabilities remain available whenever and wherever you need them.

That’s the real advantage of edge AI: it’s not dependent on network coverage, cloud services, or external infrastructure. It delivers consistent performance in the environments where surveyors actually work, turning artificial intelligence from a marketing feature into a practical tool that can be relied on every day, in any location.
